Behavior: Follow all Service Learning rules and behavior:
- No iPods, headphones at any time...leave them in your car/backpack/purse
- No Cell Phones in the classrooms or schools! These must be left in your car, in your backpack or purse and be on silent mode. You must NOT talk OR text at any time during your Service Learning class period! Abuse of this policy will jeopardize your placement in this class. This is a HUGE issue with the elementary teachers!!! (even if you see your teacher doing it! - yes, it’s a double standard)
- Dress appropriately as indicated by the stricter elementary school dress code: Consider the example you are to younger children. Clothing with inappropriate/offensive language or graphics is unacceptable. Clothing with gang- related symbols or drug, alcohol, tobacco, and/or sexual references is inappropriate. Shoulders, stomachs and backs must be covered. Halters/tank/low cut tops, see-through clothing, short skirts or shorts, and excessively torn (ripped) items are not suitable. Shorts and skirts must cover most of the thigh and be modest. Jeans, shorts, skirts and pants must be worn at or near the waist or no more than three inches below the waist. Headwear, including hats, etc. may not be worn in the classrooms, offices, or auditoriums. Clothing or accessories, which are potentially dangerous including heavy chains or spikes, are prohibited.
- Students will attend training sessions, and/or watch training videos before volunteering in the classroom to learn basic skills necessary for being a quality school volunteer.
- Students will work their way through a series of learning modules that will teach them basic skills needed to be effective Service Learners. Skills include reading aloud to young children, early math interventions, how to relate to young children in the classroom setting, how to use office machines, along with other important skills.
- These learning modules will include short quizzes with due dates. Make sure to complete them on time.
- Students will then apply acquired knowledge and skills in purposeful ways to benefit others while showing evidence of learning throughout the semester/year as a Service Learner.
Standard #3: Responsiveness to Needs in the Classroom
Service Learning Students will...
- say and show positive character and leadership traits
- show the ability to communicate in ways that engage students like “"Let's go read this book together" rather than "Do you want to read a book?"
- demonstrate good listening skills by following the directions given to them by their teacher
- physically model what they want children to do, like sit on the floor to read, use scissors, listen attentively to the teacher..
- demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to try new things
- smile! Learn their students' names!
Service Learning Students will take initiative in the classroom by...
- looking for things that need to be done, or someone who needs attention.
- not waiting for his/her teacher to ask him/her to do something.
- mingle with the children, but not distract them from their work.
- actively participate in classroom activities
- will get up, move around, and be active!
Service Learning Students will keep classroom and student confidentiality by...
- not talking about students to friends, parents or other community members outside of assigned classroom.
- not using names of students in your classroom with outsiders.
- not talking about situations that would be recognizable outside the classroom.
- keeping student records, assessments, scores, behaviors, and school information confidential.
- understanding the reason for this policy.
Evaluations
- Service Learners will be evaluated formally by their classroom teachers. These evaluations will be considered when determining Service Learning quarterly grades.
- Service Learners will evaluate their own learning experiences through self-evaluations.
- Coordinating Teacher (Mrs. Wilson) will evaluate Service Learners informally and randomly by contacting classroom teachers as well.
